From Courthouse to Community
At the heart of Arbroath High Street stands the historic Courthouse and Guildhall, iconic civic buildings that once played a central role in the life of the town. The Arbroath Courthouse Community Trust (ACCT) was formed to save these landmark buildings and bring them back into meaningful use for the people of Arbroath.
Through community ownership, partnership working and sustained fundraising, we are transforming the former courthouse into a vibrant, accessible space for learning, enterprise, culture and community activity.
Our Purpose
We exist to:
- Protect and restore Arbroath’s historic courthouse and guildhall buildings
- Return them to productive community use
- Support local regeneration, skills development and enterprise
- Create welcoming spaces for everyone to meet, learn and connect
This project is community‑led, not‑for‑profit and driven by local volunteers who believe in the power of heritage to support a stronger future.
What We’re Creating
The restored courthouse will be a flexible, welcoming place designed to serve many different needs. A building that works for the community throughout the year.
The spaces will support:
- Community events and gatherings, from meetings and celebrations to performances and exhibitions
- Events hosted by the Trust, including workshops, talks and cultural activity
- Training and learning opportunities, delivered in partnership with local organisations
- Affordable workspace for businesses, social enterprises and community groups
- Creative and heritage activity that reflects Arbroath’s history and identity
The building is being designed to adapt allowing formal and informal use, large events and small sessions, public activity and quiet work all within a restored historic setting. Every part of the building has been designed around long‑term sustainability, accessibility and community benefit.
